Aliki van der Kruis, tutor of finished Temporary Programme Fashion Matters (2015-2017), participated in The Water School: Harvest Day (#3) on 15 June 2018 during the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam.
The Water School is a working exhibition to develop a future school which will be opened in the heart of the M4H district, in the studio of Sandberg Instituut Director Jurgen Bey, Studio Makkink & Bey. It was open for six consecutive Fridays, starting from the 1st of June.
Friday 6 July 16:00 - 18:00 is the wrap up manifestation with the theme 'Document', which will discuss how to document and archive in a digitizing society. The exhibition will be complete and will include invited guest speakers Rogier Arents, Dolf Broekhuizen en Giuditta Vendrame.
Within each of the Fridays, the topics of water and education will be explored from different angles, according to a theme. The themes for the Fridays are: Clean, Grow, Harvest, Make, Build and Document. A selected team of employees from Studio Makkink & Bey will perform research on these topics and how to integrate them into the architecture and curriculum of the School, in order to present their findings each Friday.
The Harvesting Day delves into the phenomena of locality and circularity, related to (food)production. It questions what we eat, where it was harvested, and how this might or might not affect our health. Can a school not only teach its pupils about maths and geography, but also about what it means to live healthily?
Aliki van der Kruijs, wondered if it is possible to wear the weather? She therefore developed an entirely new technique: pluviagraphy. Applied to textiles and ceramics, raindrops are captured in ink and glaze, creating site- and time-specific textiles and ceramics.
