Oliver Barstow is an Amsterdam-based artist, designer and publisher. His practice originates in printed matter (books in particular), while more recent work experiments with time-based media: radio and video. With an interest in the material form of the signal, the method of its transmission, the role of the receiver and how these aspects of communication technology shape the content, Barstow’s practice is situated within the discourse of media theory. His work has been presented at The One Minutes, Hackers & Designers (NL), NXS/Fanfare (NL), Looiersgracht 60 (NL) and the Sandberg Institute (NL), and featured in, amongst others, How to think like a mountain in a land of sea, Form Magazine, The Photobook Review and Between 10&5. He holds an MFA (Materialisation in Art and Design) from the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. He is the co-founder of the independent art book publisher Fourthwall Books and has worked as the publisher and book designer on upwards of 30 titles, including six books for the artist William Kentridge. In 2017, he founded if, when. a hypothetical company that provides a framework for experimental publishing activities with printed matter, audio and video — publishing that reflects on the act of publishing. He is the recipient of the Mondriaan Fonds Jong Talent grant for 2018.

Parallel to the exhibitions and events of Sandberg Instituut, PS (Public Sandberg) published a selection of Sandberg and Post Sandberg works from the alumni index and archive. For more archival works from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut communities visit the Rietveld Academie exhibition and event page for Gerrit turns 50, Willem only 28.

Gerrit turns 50, Willem only 28 marks the anniversaries of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Sandberg Instituut. An exhibition and public programme portray elements of the histories and communities of these educational institutes of fine arts, design and interior architecture.
