Christophe Coppens, director of finished Temporary Programme Fashion Matters (2015-2017) was featured in a video made by Art Tube. The video was made in response to the exhibition: ‘Christophe Coppens, “Everything is Local’’ Landscape part 1’ that took place at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam from 9 March to 2 June 2013. The work that Coppens exhibits was commissioned by ‘Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge’.
When, in May 2012, designer Christophe Coppens announced that he was closing his fashion company, the news was completely unexpected. For 21 years he had been designing hats and other accessories and at the same time producing art works. Coppens had come to the conclusion that he could no longer combine art and fashion.
Coppens explains his final choice for art as follows: “You cannot be a good artist with the mentality of a fashion designer. I just wasn’t able to be a part-time artist.”In this interview, Coppens talks about his decision to close his fashion company and concentrate fully on art. He explains what his first piece of art as ‘full-time’ artist is about and points out where, for him, art and fashion differ from each other.
