Melle Smets | Human Power Plant

Director Documentation 2019-08-26

Human Power Plant by Melle Smets, Director of finished Temporary Programme System D Academy (2014-2016), is a multi-disciplinary research project into the possibilities of human energy production in a modern society. How would the world look like if all energy would be supplied by humans? Could we maintain a modern lifestyle with human power alone?

In our first case study, we planned to convert a 22-floor vacant building on the campus of Utrecht University into an entirely human powered student house.

In our second case study, we turn towards a backbone of the Dutch economy: the dredging industry. Sustainability is all about cars and smart appliances, but what about large infrastructure and maintenance works? The Dutch waterways were dredged out by hand for centuries, using very simple tools. What if we would (need to) do that again?
