City appropriation

As I have not experienced the frozen canals myself, and hence a different promenade and point of view of Amsterdam, I was interested in making my own experience of the city by finding a way to use the tools given by this paper and the city itself. I came up with a ‘reverse-ladder’ which is hung on bridges. By coming down the ladder and sitting on a platform, the suspended promeneur sits above the canal and takes over a privileged position: in the middle of the canal which is not accessible to anyone, overlooking the water and still being ‘attached’ to the city’s fabric. This infrastructure adapts to the Dutch culture of appropriating the public space, is inspired by the urban furniture of Amsterdam and can easily be transported from one bridge to the other.
