Waterer Watering

The image of fertilisation of land accompanies the beginnings of cinema, in the form of one of the first comedies, Louis Lumière’s “The Waterer Watered”. The common magical formula of water+ soil = the new is here turned into a mechanical gag that deconstructs the miracle itself, “To cultivate” means both to grow, but also to worship. Considering that ritual is an imitation, a repetition of the original act of creation, the plants of our imaginary grow from the same root of a truth impossible to communicate. Could one say then that the “ritualized miracle” of the green screen could be considered an infinite repetition of the divine act of creation?
