Jaasir LingerThe radio and web documentary 'Gliphoeve – Een Vergeten Strijd' (VPRO) delves into the illustrious past of the Gliphoeve flat in Amsterdam-Zuidoost: the neighborhood that was then only known as the Bijlmer. The squatting of Gliphoeve was one of the first manifestations of black activism in the Netherlands. | Around the independence of Suriname (1975) many Surinamese came to the Netherlands. To their disappointment, it turned out that hardly any housing had been arranged. A group of Surinamese activists is therefore squatting almost a hundred homes in Gliphoeve. The squatting of the Bijlmerflat Gliphoeve can be seen as one of the first manifestations of black activism in the Netherlands. The concrete complex then grows into the most Surinamese place in the Netherlands. Gliphoeve is still standing, but has been given a new name and a second life after a major renovation in 1984. In the documentary five people return to the flat with which they still have a connection. | (Winner ‘Gouden Freelancer Award’ 2016/2017) | Link to documentary film: https://youtu.be/Y50VYAm6A4E | Link to interactive documentary, including archival footage and relevant articles: https://www.vpro.nl/programmas/gliphoeve/documentaire-intro.html
