Equipping Branches

Equipping Branches repurposes fallen branches, often disregarded as waste, by integrating them into human spaces with minimal intervention. Inspired by the abundance of branches resulting from tree destruction, the project highlights their potential as functional materials within carpentry. The design uses a simple metal tube with milled instructions, allowing three branches to form a stable triangular structure without cutting or drilling. This versatile construction can function as a coat rack or, with a metal plate, a side table. Natural latex wraps protect the fragile branch ends, ensuring safety and stability while remaining easily removable, allowing the branch to return to nature after use. This work, part of the MA program Studio for Immediate Spaces at the Sandberg Instituut, stems from the course Equipping Life by Thorben Gröbel.

The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is an independent university of applied sciences with approximately 850 students. The Rietveld Academie offers the degree programme Art & Design which incorporates the various specialisations. The specialisations are led by coordinators who are responsible for the study programme and day-to-day affairs. In addition, the academy offers two master&aposs degrees and a variable number of temporary master&aposs programmes provided by the Sandberg Instituut.
