100 Beams and 1 Fungus
Department
Studio for Immediate Spaces100 Beams and 1 Fungus is a modular exhibition design created for the Ökorausch Think Tank, first displayed at the MAKK museum in 2020. Designed for reuse, the structure combines wooden beams and mycelium-grown square platforms, allowing flexible arrangements to suit diverse exhibition spaces and objects. The exhibition highlights socio-economic transformation and seeks to foster curiosity, engagement, and a sense of responsibility. Its design reflects the journey toward sustainability as a communal, open-minded, and sometimes challenging process, encouraging visitors to participate actively. The architecture merges functionality with eco-conscious materials. Mycelium is grown into shapes like platforms and lampshades using simple molds filled with substrate. Once heated, the material becomes lightweight, fire-resistant, insulating, and recyclable. Individually placeable wooden and mycelium lamps provide targeted lighting, while sunlight adds dynamic shadows that echo the network-like structure. Exhibition spaces are either floor-level or raised on stacked beams, creating an adaptable, inviting atmosphere that aligns with the vision of transformation and sustainability.
