Waking Theory
Department
DesignFour troubled individuals commit to a healing sanctuary outside the city to reenact their dreams through movement performances. Under the scrutiny of an ominous leader, they wish to exorcize the body of its emotional burden and approximate a sense of an awakening. Waking theory disseminates our research for connections between dance and film, movement and narrative, as well as the charged emotive experience we underwent during the movement rehearsals, choreographic research, rewrites and the shooting itself - waking theory is a film but it is also the beginning of a path. Our point of departure were the threads (psychosomatic, spiritual, poetic) that one can disentangle from the human body - and how to alter these through the body’s own natural capacity for mutation: movement. The result of this process was truly a healing experience, and we believe that it suggests a new perspective to the fusion of dance and film forms that is transgressive, contemplative and organic.
