Biography
I'm a filmmaker, artist, and organizer based in Amsterdam (he/they). I was born in 1994 in Lima, Peru and moved to Amsterdam as a child. I hold a BA in film and philosophy from Amsterdam University College and The New School, and an MFA in Moving Image from the Sandberg Instituut. The starting point of my work is often the subjective experience of (urban) space, and the politics, histories and futurities embedded in landscapes, architecture, and infrastructure. My latest films seek to both mourn and dismantle neoliberal promises of progress. I'm interested in notions of 'lost futures' and poetic mechanisms of memory and projection, but originating in a material critique of the present. While centered on the moving image, my practice crosses over into writing, music, and organising. I like using voice-over, expressive colors, textural images, and cinematic language to aestheticize and reframe political-urban realities and create affective, embodied experiences. My artistic work is also informed by my work in organising and housing activism: both share a collaborative, DIY spirit in which commitment to locality is key. I hope that my work will always belong as much in squatted basements as in film festivals or art spaces. My films and installations have been supported by the Netherlands Film Fund, Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Stichting Niemeijer Fonds, and Amarte Fonds and have been shown internationally at places like the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Guanajuato International Film Festival, Glasgow Short Film Festival and Theater Rotterdam.
